apt-get install linux-tree-2.6.22 linux-headers-2.6.22-3-686 gcc make libncurses5-dev
cd /usr/src
tar xjvf linux-source-2.6.22.tar.bz2
cd linux-source-2.6.22/
cp ../linux-headers-2.6.22-3-686/.config .
make oldconfig
make menuconfig

Selecting your options
  select Processor type and features  --->
    (optional) Processor family (Pentium-Pro)  --->
    (optional) *select your processor*
  select Preemption Model (No Forced Preemption (Server))  --->
    select Preemptible Kernel (Low-Latency Desktop)
  select Timer frequency (250 HZ)  --->
    select 1000 HZ

Done! okay, now at the prompt:

make-kpkg clean
make-kpkg --initrd --revision=RT1 kernel_image
 *wait for probably at least 30 or 40 min...*
cd ..
dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.22_RT1_i386.deb



reboot into the kernel called simply "Linux 2.6.22"
